I just bought a 1983, 9.9 Johnson that ran real good when I tried it out. I changed the plugs, greased everything, checked and changed the lower unit oil, etc. I think it would be a good idea to change the water pump also. I've got one of those Clymer? maintainence books, but it's all Greek to me. Is it a big job and difficult to do?

Go back a page to the "Frequently Asked Questions". Down about 3/4 of the page I have a link to articles I wrote with photos on how to maintain these motors. One of these covers pulling the lower unit & replaceing the water pump impeller.

I hate to say it but the Clymers are the easy manual, so if it's all 'Greek" to you, then changing the impeller might not be in the cards for you. Although it's really not that hard (but I have not done one on a 9.9)
