Changing Water Pump Question

I'm going to change out my water pump impeller , for the first time.

Does my shifter have to be in the forward position ? In order to drop the lower unit. Is there any hidden bolts , I need to look for ?

1988 Mariner 115 HP , In-line 6

Thanks Mike

Mike, I like to use neutral. It makes assembly a lot easier (IMHO). There will be 5 visible locknuts and a bolt under the zinc anode. The zinc anode is probably removed with an Allen wrench, but it could be a bolt as well.

Mine's a 30 HP so probably different than yours. On mine the shift shaft splits right about where the LU joins. To uncouple/couple the shift shaft the unit has to be in Forward or Reverse. On re-assembly just have to make sure the gears and shifter are in same position (both N or both R ....).

On Mike's motor, the shift connector is a splined slip fit. It is easy to mis-align it. That is why I have recommended he set it to neutral. It makes re-alignment easier.

Re: Changing Water Pump Question

I have installed my new water pump , When I'm trying to re- install my lower unit , I'm having a pain trying to line up the shift shaft into the cam. The cam is like free floating , its moving around.

I have seen on youtube where someone is installing a water pump on a in-line six and I noticed a molded
rubber / hard plastic part that is placed over the shift shaft and held in by the side grooves , I'm almost sure this part helps line up the cam when sliding the lower unit back into place.

I've looked through my motor manual and I don't see this part ?

Here's a pic of the part.

Thanks Mike

Installing that part in the midsection, holds the upper shift shaft in the proper place, for reassembly. If you do not have one, perhaps a needlenose plier can grab the upper shift shaft and align it.

Mike, I was unable to find it on the parts list. I think they were used on many models in the 70s, at least. Hopefully you can find one or work around it.

Hey Chris

I've been trying the needle nose plies , its wearing me out , here's the deal , I've been able to slide the lower unit all the way up except about 1 inch , cannot get it to move flush ? Any thing else to try here ? I have the motor in neutral.

Mike, Have you mated the driveshaft splines? They need to mate first. Turn the flywheel until they align and the gearcase will slide on enough to get a nut on it. The upper shift shaft can move up an inch or so, to give you some "wiggle room". After you align it, try to push it down.

Re: Changing Water Pump Question

I've been able to get the nuts on , can I start to tighten everything and draw the lower unit up the rest of the way ?

I guess I'll know if the shift shaft is lined up when I go to put it into gear forward / reverse ?

Re: Changing Water Pump Question

It is best to wiggle the gearcase on, until it meets the midsection, tightening the nuts with fingers only. Then you can tighten the nuts with a wrench. That way you shouldn't screw up the crank or driveshaft splines. Hopefully you can see the orientation of the shift shafts, as you put the gearcase into place.

Did you look for that plastic part in the gearcase, around the lower shiftshaft? They end up their often. I stick 'em back in the midsection with grease.

Chris

I've been told that part # 92704 (Guide-Push Rod)... NOT USED on power trim models ? I can't seem to get the lower unit back on , so the boat is headed to the marina Friday.

Re: Changing Water Pump Question

The guide-push rod is likely the reverse lock rod. Those are not used on PTT models.
