I’ve almost finished restoring a 1988 198xl and I’m down to fixing all the “little things”. One of the biggest issues is the hinges for my.... I guess I’ll call it the glove box? (It’s the flip up plexiglass door that has the radio in it and a lock on it). Anyway they are broken and I can’t seem to find a replacement. Also I’ve never had the key to the door anyway. Any suggestions on where to find hinges or even a new (or used) door with a key? I’ve checked the hinges for sale here to no avail. Too dark for pictures but I can take some tomorrow if needed. Thanks all!

You will not find an exact hardware match for a 30 year old boat. Even if you were to find a donor boat that is identical or someone parting one out, the odds of that piece being usable are slim to none.

You are going to have to fabricate one. I don't know that you will need a locking mechanism as any radio you find now to fit the boat is probably not sought after on the black market. Regardless, its plexiglass and if someone really wants it, they will get it. You can find plexiglass that you can cut to fit and take a trip to your local hardware store and look at their selection of stainless hinges and rig something up. Depending on the trim you are going with on the restoration and your skill level, you may even be able to fabricate something out of a matching wood. You have a blank canvas to work with.

another option if you really want a locking door is to look into RV access doors. There are plenty available that lock and you just need to make sure it fits your existing opening, or modify your opening to take one. They come in different colors and you can also paint it to match your color scheme.

Heck, people on the Chap Facebook page can't locate replacement parts for 2017 boats. The model specific stuff goes instantly out of production and you rely on any new old stock or anything that was universal and was used broadly. Keep your eyes peeled on Ebay or someone selling that boat and buy it for parts and store in your pole barn.

I appreciate the replies. I'm thinking that you are correct and I'll have to make something else work. The plexi itself is in great shape. Even the Chaparall sticker still looks good. I don't care about the lock but that's how it holds itself closed. There's always another way I suppose. Thanks again

Post a pic when you get a chance for some suggestions based on what we can see. Not so much guessing.
