I have a 1985 chaparral 187xl and was hoping somebody could help me with wiring schematics.
1. I noticed the other day when I tried to start the boat that I had no power when turning ignition on. I pulled the fuse beside the ignition and put it back in and everything worked until I tried to start it. Batterys brand new with brand new cables. I seen some corrosion in the fuse holder so I ordered a new one.
2. there’s a wire that grounds right beside the starter solenoid with another wire that goes through the rear of the boat at the bell housing but I lost it from there. Could be a add on but wanted to make sure it wasent something serious as the coating is starting to disintegrate
Thanks for the help in advance!

boats generally do not have schematics

however the motor and controls do, so start with the manual for the outboard or I/O that you have

but your issue is most likely bad connections. just like your fuse holder (which you could have simply cleaned up with a scotchbright pad), you need to clean up every connection from the battery to the motor and back, from the starter to slave solenoid and all the way up to the helm

by clean, you need to clean them with either 150 grit sand paper, a scotchbright pad or a wire brush on a drill. they need to be clean enough your mother-in-law would eat off them.

even with new batteries and cables, you need to still clean them.

Ok I was not aware of that. I can do it the old fashion way with a ohm meter then. I went through and cleaned all grounds and power connections on the engine. And replace the slave solenoid. The fuse holder on the gauge panel was corroded really bad inside with the glass fuse so I just bought a handful of them and going to replace them all and rewire any bad circuits I see. Thanks for the help

replaced all the fuse holders and rewired a few shotty connections under the dash and got power to everything but the moment i would go to start the boat i would loose power to everything again. so i started searching for all ground connections. i checked over the whole boat and finally went back to where i started and pulled the ground wire from the battery to block off and ohm'd it out and found my problem. the ground cable had really high resistance in it unhooked from everything, so i ordered a new one and while waiting for it i cut the coating off the old cable and found alot of corrosion under the coating. the cables were on the boat when i bought it but looked brand new but looks can be deceiving! thanks for the help and im sure ill be back for more advice as i tear into the stern drive for maintenance!
