Charge Coil

The charge coil on my 1990 Evinrude 115 hp engine is testing bad. No resistance across the leads. The manual says it should be 400 to 500 ohms or so. Is this a common problem? What could cause the coil to go bad?

Re: Charge Coil

Is the ohm meter set to high ohms, and what color are the wires you're attaching the ohm meter leads to?

Re: Charge Coil

I misstated the reading in the original post. I was checking the resistance across the leads to the powerpack. According to the manual, they should read 480 ohms +/- 25, I am reading infinity (open circuit). The manual recommends replacing the charge coil (stator).

Yep..... If you're reading across the two yellow wires or in some cases a yellow wire and a yellow/gray wire leading from that stator, and the ohm meter is set to high ohms, it should appear almost as a dead short... quite a needle movement if using that type meter.

If there's no reading at all, an open circuit, I agree that the stator's bad.

Re: Charge Coil

Short of buying OEM parts from a dealer, what's another good source for parts like the charge coil/stator on this motor?
