Charging 16+ Volts

dont know what to do!!!! 1987 90 hp 3 cyl merc. any ideas . where do i start looking any help would great.. all have a good day ...this site rocks!!!! arcrat ..thanks in advance...

I am not sure what your question is but if you mean that your dash gauge shows 16+ volts when the motor is running, then either the dash gauge is bad or your regulators are bad. Use another voltmeter to confirm the voltage level and if it also shows the voltage as too high, then you need to replace your regulator.

16 volts is the norm if your running an unregulated charging system...Like yours I think .Some will install universal voltage regulator to keep the voltage down.I run at 16 volts,and so do a lot of mercs.Do a search for 16 volts,if your worried about it you should be able to find some generic voltage regulator part numbers from radio shack.


Side note:check your battery cables..not just the connections.

Thank you hkeiner for your info ... my guage +depth finder has a meter reading same volts ... i have a unregulated charging sytem.. thank you cell for your infor ....i changed the rectificer + no change ...do you install regulater after rectificer or in place of???? i well check all wireing and let u know!!!! thank you bought again...arcrat from okla, city ,ok....

If your rectifier was bad Id say you wouldn't be charging at all.An rectifier well rectifies....It doesn't regulate.Did you search the forum for 16 volts?

Not yet !!!!! but i will Thank you very much. Ifound a few bad wires from the triger!! i oderd a new one from Iboats..... thanks to you all arcrat
