This might be a silly question but I am new so...

Can I run an onboard charging system with a 25hp outboard? The boat I am looking at has two batteries and I have heard of boats that have charging systems on board. Is it possible to do this? I know cars and how their charging systems work but with boats????

Do most people just take the boat out of the water and hook up a charger on long trips? If this is possible can someone tell me the right name of such a system so I can shop around and not sound like a complete idiot?

Re: charging batteries

the 25 electric start only has minimum charging capability, to maintain the starting battery. a lot of us just charge our batteries at home before a fishing trip. for extended trips, the batteries may need to be recharge during the trip. what are you going to be using the battery power for?

Re: charging batteries

I have a 50lb thrust trolling motor, fish finder (maybe 2 but I was warned against that with a 16'), a pump for the live well and I would like to add a port/plug for a nice spot light and maybe a couple of those pole/indicator lights for the early mornings.

Re: charging batteries

a starting battery for the motor, and a deep cycle for the rest, full charge before you go, and again when you get home. they do not like to be left uncharged.
