I have several batteries I take out for the winter and store in basement. I usually charge them before storing. One has the removable cap and I have always charged without problem. A couple of the newer ones are "maintenace freer" and I'm not sure if I should open them to charge. Don't want to blow anything up!

Don't remove the 'caps' on the maintainence free ones...they are there for venting purposes only.

Happy boating!

You shouldn't need to remove the caps on any of them. They should be vented.

Re: charging batteries

"Maintenance-free batteries" should realy be called "low maintenance batteries". They are not maintenance free, they just use less water than standard batteries. If you use a Maintenance free battery in an application where it is charged a lot, it can run out of water and fail.

Most Maintenance Free batteries have caps that can be opened for adding distilled water. They are not easy to open, but it may be done.
