I have a 1962 evinrude lark iv with out a generator. I want to put a marine stereo in my boat and was wondering how I can charge battery while boating so don't get stranded. I've heard of the solar chargers would this be enough so I don't have to keep bringing battery in house to charge or could I mock up a car alternator to it with an internal voltage regulator.

Re: charging battery

I have no knowledge of the solar chargers BUT that engine operates via a magneto is is easily rope started to avoid the possibility of being stranded.

Ok that's good to know but how can I hook a stereo up and not have to drag battery in house to charge.

I've seen solar chargers on boats down here but never paid much attention. You may want to google it and I'm sure you'll find something.

Re: charging battery

Get a long extension cord and an automotive battery charger. Put the charger on the battery in the boat and charge away....

Re: charging battery

I've seen 20 watt ones for 60. Might just have to get 2 batteries if can't find solution.

Do what you're doing now and bring a boom box? Do tell if you 'mock up' an automotive alternator, might be worth a patent ... ;)

Re: charging battery

why not just get a small motorcyle battery (12v) or small lead/acid sealed unit for feed the radio only.

Of course if you are planning to boom yourself across a peacefull lake while fishing I think the fish will get wise to you.

just measure the current drain when the radio is on to see if you draw more than a couple hundred milliamps at 12volts

300 milliamps on a 10-15 amp/h battery should give you enough sound to enjoy and not distrurb the whole mountain. The solar cell will make it last even longer.
