charging issue has me at a stand still

I have an 87 mercruiser 3.0. Noticed battery volts low when I was out the other day. They would go up to about 14v then down to 12v. At the post of alt it was at 12.8 same as battery, then sometimes way lower like 5. Figured bad connection. Took alt out cleaned connections put it back in. Now 0 volts. The charging wire has 12.8 like the battery and once it touches the alt post its zero. Took condenser off and still the same. Good grounds all around. It's a 4 wire alt.

Dis regard. Apparently the rules of insulation apply to me too.... 40 cent nylon washer to isolate hot wire. Dope slap
