Good morning all, I recently bought this boat and I am having a problem with the charging circuit. It's not charging.

1989 115 HP OC163654

I hooked up an amp meter on the red wire and check at idle up to 1500 rpm (had it on muffs didn't want to go any higher). 0 amps, no movement at all.

Checked on diode test, both yellow terminals. no continuity one way and read .523 reversed, (not sure what that reading means)

Resistance reading on Voltage Regulator (wires disconnected). Yellow to red 500k and 400k, Yellow to ground 500k each. Red to ground 11k. Yellow to Yellow 1.2M

Checking the yellow wires on stator, yellow to yellow about .1 to .3 ohms (fluctuated a little). Yellow to ground. infinity to both.

Red wire from VR to ground 11k.

Battery test good, fully charged (not over charged)

New Tachometer, sometimes it reads fine, sometimes it reads nothing, sometimes flaky.

I've been reading the forums, Seloc, Mercury manuals, but just a bit confused on what is going on here. I THINK the VR and stator test ok.

Don't want to spend $100 to $150 on a VR if it is not bad.

Any thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated.

How sensitive is the ammeter? How small will it read.

A 9 or 16 amp charging system will not put out much even sped up to 1500.

A volt meter may show the low charging easier. See what battery voltage is before starting, then again after running the motor a few minutes at 1800 to 2000, you shopuld see the voltage rise at speed.

CharlieB, the ammeter reads in tenths, or maybe .5 amps. I'll check the voltage, I have a volt gauge on the dash, even at WOT it stays steady at 12 to 13 volts.

If you checked yellow terminals to ground, that's normal. The number is the forward junction voltage. If you checked between the yellow terminals, you have one shorted diode (of 4)in the bridge rectifier.

Look up the rectifier test in the FAQ on this site.

Ammeter should work fine, as long as it will show 5-10. System output should max at 2000 rpm or less. Stator AC into it is about 15V per 1000 rpm open circuit. Voltmeter is simpler to hook up, however.

hope it helps
