I’m wondering if charging kits are available for a 1990 8hp evinrude 2 Stroke. I’ve found them for 2001 and up.
I’m considering going with electric downriggers and don’t want to deplete my house battery.
just wondering if it’s an option.

Yes,, at least it was, part number 0174892 for the full kit of parts

Very similar to the kit for the 2001-2004 . Same rectifier but different stator coil.

Guessing 5 amp -- check a parts list. But in any case, a two-battery system might be better if running down riggers, fish finder.

Hey guys, thanks again for your help. Before I order the kit I should ask if I can run this motor without having it connected to a battery. Or will that be detrimental to if there’s nothing to discharge to?

it does not look like it comes with an accessory plug end which is something I would like to add. (So I can either use it connected or disconnected)

Reason being is that I would like to use this motor as both my kicker and also as a “grab and go motor” for back lake use on small boats without a battery.

if it needs somewhere to discharge to, do you think I could rig up a pigtail to discharge it back to the motor or somewhere?

Running with no battery connected should not be a problem but it would be sensible to make sure the wires cannot short circuit
Disconnecting the battery while it is actually running may well damage the rectifier.
What will destroy the rectifier almost instantly is connecting the battery with the polarity reversed.

ITYWF that the charging kit comes with fairly long lead ( about a metre IIRC) with ring terminals on the end. I shortened the lead on my 6hp Yachtwin and connect it via a non reversible deck plug and socket.
I dont know if Bulgin Buccaneer plugs are available where you are but that is what I would suggest if they are.

Excellent advice, thank you. I was planning a plug exactly like that. Now I understand the importance now.
Much appreciated

My kit is on order, any idea if it will work on the earlier 7.5 Johnson’s? My Brother has one and he’d like one also if it will. Early 80’s I think
