Charging Problem 1989 150 HP Evinrude, need to know the following.

1. How do I test to make sure the charging system is working or not.
2. If it's not working I assume it would mean the rectifier is bad, correct?

I found several charging post, but all seem a little different. Jusy want to make sure I get the right information. (Don't have a manual yet, but will soon)

Both batteries are less the six months old, battery problem started within the last month. The boat stays in a slip and is used 4 or 5 times a week. I now have to charge them with an external charger.

Any help would be appriciated.

1. How do I test to make sure the charging system is working or not. MEASURE DC VOLTAGE ACROSS BAT TERMINALS WITH ENGINE @ FAST IDLE. IF < 13 VDC, NOT CHARGING.
2. If it's not working I assume it would mean the rectifier is bad, correct? NO. COULD BE RECTIFIER, STATOR OR WIRING. COULD ALSO BE MORE THAN ONE ISSUE.

That engine does not have a simple rectifier. It comes standard with a combination regulator/rectifier that sits between the two cylinder banks under the flywheel. I'd follow Wilde's recommendation regarding checking the voltage. If it is charging properly, you should see around 13.5 volts once the engine has run for a while. If you have a tach, check it for operation. The rectifier/regulator sends signals to the tach. If it goes bad, in can cause the tach to read funny, or not at all. Make sure your battery leads are very clean and very tight. Also possible you have a battery drain. Pull all the leads off one of the battery posts and check each with a voltmeter. You may have a circuit which is "on" like an amp in a radio, or a light under some compartment lid.

I have now started working on this boat again and have done the measurments above.

I checked the battery with the motor off and the voltage read 13v on my meter, I then started the motor and let it warm up. When I rechecked the voltage it was no different. I checked it at the A/B switch on the cable coming from the engine, I wanted to eliminate the possibility of a bad cable.

I aslo confirmed the tach is working fine. Need to know what to check next.

Thanks..

I would suggest checking the AC voltage to the R/R by measuring the AC voltage across the yellows from the stator, again with motor at fast idle. You should get > 30 VAC. Note this is AC, NOT DC. If voltage is low, the stator or wiring is at fault. If voltage is OK, the R/R or wiring is bad.

Thanks Jim,

I checked the A/C voltage at the yellow wires, at 700 RPM I had around 18 volts. I then increased the idle to 1000 RPM and had had 21 volts A/C.
Based on your previous post this indicates the stator is bad, but did this test eliminate the R/R?

Also when removing the flywheel to get at the stator is there any timing issue, I know the flywhell is keyed and can only go back on one way. Just want to make sure I don't mess up something else.

Thanks

Just in case....have you checked the online fuse?

Thanks to all that help, just wanted to reply with the actual repair that solved the problem..

The 4 Gauge wire going to the battery had about 4 " of corrosion under the insulation, apparently when checking for 12V it read OK but the resistance was apparently stoping the charging cycle.

Replace this cable & everything is ok..
