Charging Problem

I have a 1993 Evenrude 150 Intruder. Last night coming into the Landing I noticed my tach was not working and when I looked at my volt meter she was setting on 12 volts. It always runs around 13.5 Volts.

Everyone tell me to just order a reg/rec.

I will look at all the connections tonight just to make sure I do not have a lose or bad wire. Can I check some voltages or do a omhs test on the reg/rec.

Or does it sound safe to just spend the $230.00 and replace the reg/rec.

Click over to the engine FAQ section of iboats, find the thread about water-cooled rect/reg testing by Joe Reeves.......

Re: Charging Problem

Thanks for the help. But my reg/rec is water cooled. I guess what would help me more than anything is if someone could give me the ohms reading on the yellow and yellow and gray wire coming out of my stator. This would let me know if my Stator is ok. Here is the info from my motor.

1993 150 V6
Mod# E150GLETR
Ser# G03169135
reg/rec# 584093

I am getting a reading of .7 ohms if I check it right now. And it does not show either one of them going to ground.

I have an old book, it only goes up to a 1991 and it show the reading should be .7 for a 9 amp system. Is my system a 9 amp? Looking up my reg/rec number I thought it was a 35 amp system. If that is the case, according to the old book my ohm reading should be .16, so I hope someone has a manual that covers my mod # so I can see if .7 is the right reading. I am unsure because my book only covers up to 1991.

If I was to guess I need the Reg/Rec. But if I spend $225.00 for a Reg/Rec, I want to make sure that is my problem.

Thanks a lot for all the help!

Check out thread

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=212967

I have manual at home for 1995 150hp and will post this evening with ohm readings. If you simply place a volt meter across the battery terminals before and after starting with no difference, odds are it's the rect.. It is 35 amp and water cooled. Thread above may save you a few bucks. These rect have a thermal cutout if they overheat. Try it again when cool to verify it's bad. Make sure all battery connections, battery switch connections, and the red lead from the rect to the starter are clean and tight. Make sure you have 12vdc on the purple lead to the rect. when the key is on and motor not running.
Good luck

Re: Charging Problem

Thanks Angus for the help and I will look forward to the ohm readings.

The first thing I did was checked and clean all connections. I was sure everything at the Batteries were ok because everything worked ok. Starting, trim, tilt and all of my functions. But, I cleaned everything anyways.

Oh, I said batteries because I have two start batteries. This is because I have this motor on a Stratos bass boat and I spend a lot of my time fishing bass tournaments. So I have installed two batteries four or five years ago to run my air pumps and fish finders and everything else. This has been a bullet proff motor, so I have no complaints if I have to put a couple dollars in her. This will be the first thing except reg maintenance that has ever been done in 14 years. I did replace the VOR pump because of it's age, not failure.

Every one I talked to tells me to just order the REG/REC, even the dealers say the hardly every see a OMC charging stator go. I have a tournament on Saturday and I am running out of time trouble shooting, so the readings will be a big help.

Re: Charging Problem

Here's the deal...

Disconnect plug from stator to rect.
Calibrate ohmeter to scale (appx 0.10 ohm)
Connect to yellow and yellow/gray lead from stator
Reading should be 0.12 ohm +/- 0.07 ohm

If not, you can check to see if stator is grounded.....
One lead to clean engine ground, one lead to yellow wire
Should read near infinite Same for yellow/gray
This is for a 1995, but I believe they are the same
Good luck

If you need more info.....just shout

Re: Charging Problem

Thanks again, I did check the readings again last night and I think the Stator is ok. I was getting no grounded wires and .7 on the meter. I will have a REC/REC here today and I will post the results.

Thanks Angus for the help.
Time for me to order a manual!

Re: Charging Problem

Changed the Reg/Rec last night. Put her on the muffs and looks like it cured my problem. My Tach is up and running. I did not run it long on the muffs or tach it up, but I am sure if my tach is back, she is charging ok. I will put her in the water tonight and check my charging system.

Thanks for all the help!
