i have a mercruiser 4.3l 1990. i started blowing blower fuses so i replaced the blower figuring it was going bad. yesterday while out i noticed my volt meter jumping up to 15-16 volts and could hear the drag of the alternator on the engine and my new blower runing faster then volt meter jumped back down to 14 where it normally sits. did this number of times thru the day. thinking voltage regulator going bad in the alternator, would this be a good conclusion or should i look for something else, boat is starting fine. battery seems strong.

Re: charging problem

Yes, the regulator is a strong possibility. Remove your alternator, take to your local starter/alternator/electric motor shop have have it checked and fixed.

Re: charging problem

check the ouput of the alternator with a volt meter at the output stud on the alternator (orange wire) this will tell you exactly how much voltage the alternator is putting out

normal should be approx 14.5 volts at 1500-2000 rpm
