Charging question

Just recently purchased a 1995 Bass Tracker Tournament Pro 18 from the original owner, an older gentleman who was very meticulous about the boat. When it came to charging the trolling motor battery, he bought an additional plug like the trolling motor, plugged it in and clipped the battery charger to it charging the battery backwards thru the system. The battery is hard to get in to, so he said he got tired of a major job for each charging. Evidently he has done it this way for years, but Im a little concerned. Has anyone heard of this, and if so, will I do any damage or fry the whole system? I trised it once, and it took about 2 hours for a full charge on trickle. Any help is appreciated, as I am stumped. Oh yeah, and is there anything I should worry about as far as a safety issue? Thanks in advance.

Re: Charging question

That is a perfectly fine way to charge the battery. The extra plug and wires are just an extension of the charger leads. As long as all of the wires are sized and connected properly, there is no safety issue.
