I currently have an Evinrude 4-stroke kicker for my new to me used Starcraft Islander My question is this approx. what would you guesstimate cost to add or convert my system into one that would create an electrical output for charging purposes. And would it be worth the cost?? The model# E15FREDR 15 hp 4-stroker 1996 My thought was for trolling I could gain some charge output to help the batteries. Majority of time on the big lake is spent trolling (Lake Michigan)
Thanks for any advise.....Frank

That is a '96. I think OMC built those before they started buying 4 stroke outboards from Suzuki. My '97 Johnson 9.9 4 stroke had charging coils.

First, get a Service Manual and make sure whether it has charging coils or not. It might be that they were optional or that they came on the electric start models only.

My guess is that they are there and not working or not connected.

If it's a rope start it has no charging system capabilities. The electric start had a charging system. It probably wouldn't be worth the cost to convert it over.

Would you say the money invested to add a charging system would be better invested into a brand new motor?? If you were to buy a new kicker with charging capabilities which motor would you purchase??

My guess is that converting your engine to electric start and a charging system would cost a lot less than a good 15HP 4 stroke engine.

Check out the salvage yards listed in the Top Secret file.

If I had to buy a new kicker it would be an Evinrude E-Tec. As JB said, check out the salvage yards in the Top Secret File. You may find something to convert yours.
