I inherited a 35 Hp Johnson. J35RCTS. I was told it's a 1983. It's rope start.
Short shaft (15") How can I tell if it has a charging system? If not what do I need to do to make it elec start and charge my starting battery. Is all of this worth the costs?
Thanks for your response. Have a great day.

Re: Charging system?

pictures would be helpful in this situation since it is rope start it most likely doesn't have a charging system however if the flywheel has another set of teeth then it could be possible to run dc generator, otherwise it would have to have a stator under the flywheel to create ac current and a rectifier to convert it back to dc to charge the battery. Also as many many others will tell you getting an oem service manual will help you greatly. They are available on iboats. http://www.iboats.com/Marine-Boat-M...2639773--**********.139682550--view_id.216500
avoid seloc or clymer manuals as they cover a broader range and will not have any specifications or techniques specific to your motor.

Re: Charging system?

Check if you have 2 yellow wires coming out from under the flywheel?
If so, you have a charge coil and only need a rectifier.
If not, you need both a charge coil and rectifier.
Next you need a starter with bracket and solenoid to make it electric start, providing ,as mentioned above, you have the gears at the flywheel.
If the price is worth it, you have to decide, but shop around on e-Bay, and dealers. You will probably find used parts around.
