iv got a late 80s merc 5.7L i replaced the alternator and the battery. the engine will run fine but the battery is like dead after i shut the engine off, it will barely crank. i kept trying to crank it and cooked the wire that goes form the alt to the battery. i can jump it and it works fine, but after i shut it off its dead.

the old alternator had these 2 wires in a black plug. the new alternator does not have this option but there is a black rubber thing in place of it that says do not remove. i just put a nut on the wires that went to it.

any ideas?

Re: charging

Have you measured the voltage at the battery with the engine running? Should be around 14V or so.

what do you mean both wires on 1 stud? no i did not wire them toghether.......... not a thing is different between the 2 besides the 2 wires which i have found out are made to the key switch to pretty much tell the alternator to work. and new alternators are not needed.

i am pushing about 14 volts running. a friend of mine sho is a mechanic said i may need more startign amps and to add another battery. i figure this is right becuase i did have 2 and i removed one.
