i have a1993 40 hp johnson on a 15ft boat, only have other than elect. start is a ff. will this motor keep the battery charged?

It should if you are running the motor long enough. Keep in mind that the charging output is very low at idle. The faster you run the motor to more efficient the charging system. Periodically check to be sure it is working properly by monitoring the voltage at the battery at idle. As you increase RPMs you should see a voltage increase. You may be ablt to do this with your depth finder if it displays the battery voltage.
