If you are draining oil from the dipstick, how important is it to buy a higher-end hand pump? I see pumps at K-Mart and Walmart for $10, and I've seen, what looks like the same thing, on-line and at local marine stores for $50. If I am only using it for draining from the dipstick, anyone know if the $10 will do the job? Packaging says it will...

Bubba Says : Don't matter ---> it has oil running through it ----> it will never wear out

I could suck it out with a long straw I guess --> as long as I get all the oil, crud, metal etc,. out. I like well made things myself --- brass or at least a good metal --- I drop things a lot and plastic always breaks.

I could make an oil pump out of my old raw water pump impeller --- could change oil quick, fast, and in a hurry

There is another post with the best minds in the oil changing field working on this problem

The first time I changed the oil in my I/O i used a cheaper hand pump from the hardware store. It took about 300 revolutions to get a pint out, it seemed like. It took 30 minutes solid cranking. Very slow. The vacuum pump I bought the next time was easy, fifty pumps in 1 minute or so to prime it, then released the clamp and went off and did something else and 10 minutes later I heard it gurgling as it was done.

I agree, pop the plug and drain it into a bag or let it go out the transom drain ito a bucket....I dont like the pumps they dont get everything out, its like putting on dirty underweare. Im putting on one of thoes hose fittings in a few weeks.

You could, but the impeller wouldn't last long (wrong material) and it probably wouldn't work very well for the small volume it has to pump.

I see by this post, that re-inventing the wheel is still alive and well.

I just bought one of these today www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_390306_390306. Works great is very quick as well. Spend the extra 29 bucks!
