Re: cheap way of water proofing deck

you are never going to get the constancy needed for strong resin.

thinking about this.......i think you may have to do some reading about what you want to do and why it needs to be done.....

the reason for glassing a deck is not just water proofing.....

that is only one of the reasons......

the deck is the sole of the boat and a major structural part......it needs to be made as such,

the deck sees major traffic...that is another reason.....

if it were just as a cover for the stringers....we would just paint the wood......but its not .

You have much to learn young padawan...listen to obi-wan-oops!...

what is your final goal?

Waterproofing your deck is not going to reverse whatever damage may have already begun below it...

Read, follow and understand the directions... it will get you far and maybe keep you from sinking.

Best of Luck,

Re: cheap way of water proofing deck

I have already replaced the stringers and transom. Just wanted to know about the deck. The deck that I removed had 1/8 inch of glass on it. Not very much in my opinion. Will a 5/8 deck tabbed in not give me enough strength. Is that 1/8 inch of glass also needed for strength?

My BAD! I jumped in without knowing the facts, please, forgive...

I will defer to the powerful knowledge base available through out this restoration forum and the true resto gurus to answer your query...

Re: cheap way of water proofing deck

Definitely will have strength with 5/8, but it will not matter without the proper glass job.

Using it in a thin spread out kind of fashion, like rolling it out on a deck, it is useless. It would much easier than it would if it had been glassed with some sort of mat or woven material. You'll just be wasting resin IMO.

There is no cheap way to do anything to a boat, but there are a lot of wrong ways.

So to answer your original question, Yes.

This is how you should fabricate your deck, stringers and transom. Hopefully you followed these basics. Don, one of our Mods said it best...

Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time,
But always enough time to do it again?

Re: cheap way of water proofing deck

Im a little at a loss.

First off....lets get on the same page. what are you asking to use?.....1/2 inch fibres, mixed into the resin like peanut butter.....or 1/2 oz csm?....

Neither will work properly. Again.....I have never seen 1/2 oz csm. rather 3/4 oz is the thinnest I have seen. And that is very thin.....very very thin.

What you are looking to do is to encapsulate the plywood deck with glass.....on the bottom...and on the top, with more layers of glass on the top for wear.

The minimum you want on the top of your deck is 8oz. of glass. I use 2 layers of 1.5 csm, and a 6 oz woven. This gives me 9 oz on the deck with a smooth surface.
The tabbing is done with one 6-8 inch layer of 1708.

i typed this link out for you.......but decided it needed its own search engine friendly thread

i hope it helps you.

Re: cheap way of water proofing deck

What my goal is with this boat is to get 5-7 years out of it. I decided to save this boat from the dumpster and replaced all the rotten wood. I am trying to keep costs down but still make it safe. What I have found is that from the factory the transom was just painted and not glassed over. It had just a little glass in the bilge area. They also did not cover the bottom of the floor with glass. I did cover the transom with mat for a little more protection but even without the glass on the transom and floor they lasted 20+ years. If you all think that I need the glass on the top of the deck for strength then I will do it. I was thinking that the glass on the deck was more for water protection and the wood when tabbed in would provide the structural support. When I look at the glassing pictures for transoms, stringers and floor they are ten times better than what they did from the factory on my boat. My stringers were not capped and everything was just nailed together. It seems like the factory never did it right the first time but then again it lasted 20 years.

Re: cheap way of water proofing deck

that is one of the biggest thinge we deal with here.....it was done this way and it has lasted..

this is correct.....however....as time goes by....and the manufacturers find better ways of building boats...un fortunately...better is not cost effective for unit construction.
if your boat had an owner that left it out in the open...un covered....i will gaurentee that it would not have lasted 10 years.....even 5 with the current transom setup.

we as home builders, look for ways to make sure out boats last.
the link i gave you is the correct way of doing it to make your boat last for many years.

but if you dont really care .....and just want to go fishing......screw the deck down and paint it. but be prepaired to replace it in 3 years and re paint it every season,.

so....for the extra few dollars....and the extra day.....why not do it right?

1/8 inch is 3 layers of 1 1/2 oz csm (25 layers per inch approx). one layer will stop a 9mm bullet...3 layers turns yer 5/8 plywood into approx 2 5/8 plywood...add one layer of same csm underneath and you have the strength of 3 inches of ply...

the strength added is exponential...do 2 layers minimum on top, one underneath. it is necessary.
