Cheaper Cushion Idea

So I just bought a Bristol 24 sailboat, if it wasn't freezing cold on Lake Erie, she could Ben sailed right now. But since it is nearly November I'm looking forward to the spring. Most pressing is the salon cushions or the lack there of. All the cushion are gone, so I plan on making new ones as cheaply as I can.

Disclaimer: What I'll be proposing below isn't the status quo on marine uplostery. This is a $300 dollar boat, I don't intend to spend $2-3000 dollars on cushions, I want something that will work and not break the bank. I am aware of the traditional methods and they are exorbitantly too expensive for my tatstes, the foam especially.

Now that we have that out of the way, I stumbled across a blog post about making cheap cushions (raw link at bottom). To sum up for those who don't follow the link, they used egg crate foam, aka mattress topper foam, about 3" thick the covered it in fabric in a traditional way, the foam it's self lasted 7 years and was reportedly comfortable. My thoughts are this, I can get a 3" thick California king sized egg crate topper for 44 dollars at Wally World, this would do the V berth plus some of the dinette, I'll pick up a double sized one for like $25 and finish off the dinette and quarter berth then use some kind of respectable fabric.

What do those of you who've been there and done that think of this? Is this suitable? Bear in mind this isn't a liveaboard (yet lol) but I hope it will see moderate use. The other idea I had I wanted to run past you all is making the cushion covers like a pillow case or with a elastic band. Upholstery isn't exactly something I foresaw myself ever doing, but here I am, this way I feel like would be easier for a newbie like me to do and would be more forgiving to mistakes. Thoughts?

I agree with going the new route, although for the sake of driving down price it was a good suggestion.

I used free couch cushions in my boat and it worked great!! Look up how to make envelop cushions. Easy to make and function well. If you can find a Old Singer 15-91 machine it will sew the fabric really well. I’m pretty sure if you use donor couch foam you could make the covers for $50 bucks or less. If you need a source for interior cushion fabric let me know. I've done a couple v-Berth upholstery jobs. Pretty simple to do. I used a waterproof canvas and total cost was around $60 for the fabric. (8 yards)

Hey I've been thinking about this more, how did you glue the foam? Did you just glue end to end or side to side with uplostery glue? I'm trying to picture how to do long sections with reclaimed stuff.

Most couch cushions are 5-6" thick. I used my bandsaw with a Metal cutting blade and sliced it into 3" strips. (Electric Carving Knife works too, but the band saw gives perfect straight cuts.) I then laid them flat and glued with 3M Super 77 glue. The foam will actually tear in another location before it tears at the glue line. Spray both sides, let sit for a minute then stick em together. For my bench seat I also covered the foam with 1/2" poly batting. Used the spray glue to attach it on Top, Bottom and all four sites. I then cover it with WalMart Plastic Bags. Any kind of plastic would work but I'm CHEAP so the bags worked well. I slit them at the seams then glued multiple pieces onto the batting. This does two things 1.) keeps cloth backing of the Vinyl from chafing the foam and deteriorating it, and 2.) Adds a bit of waterproofing too.

Woodonglass,
So I'm trying to envision cutting them to size. So say you have a cushion that's 30"x30" and 6" thick do you cut it down the center long ways making two 30x30" pieces 3" thick then glue them together to get a 30x60x3 piece on which you transfer your patterns? That's what I'm picturing at least.

No you will cut 10- 3" x 6" pieces and then lay them out. You'll have 10 glue joints.
