check a tach

Before I connect my tach, how do I check it with a multimeter to see if it is going to work. And how do I hook up the tach? I have a 1978 Mercury 1150 inline 6, 2 cycle.

ground wire
power wire to ing switch
sender to either of the 2 yellow wires on the rectifier
ligth to the boat ligthing system

best way to check tach is to hook it up as above
