So towing around a sailboat with a 28 ft. or taller mast plus the hull and trailer is safe? I think he got off lucky. Reckless driving seems to fit and maybe destruction of public/private property too.

Re: Check clearance

In the photo the mast is off. I wonder if it got pulled off when it came off the trailer, or if the owner decided to go ahead and put the effort into taking it off AFTER he wrecked his boat

Re: Check clearance

Well a semi or box truck is about 13 ft. 6 in. and they clear power lines unless there is a road restriction. The pic is of the recover and re-trailering using the fork lift. And the driver told police the mast hit the power lines. I think the mast was taken off after the fact. I'll let you form your own conclusions.

And the title of the article is "
[h=1]Craft?s mast breaks after catching utility line, knocking it off trailer"[/h]

Sorry - I was trying to be clever at the expense of being clear. The 15' sloop I used to run had a either an 18' or 21' mast on her (can't remember now). Trailer + boat + mast = way the heck up there. There's no good reason that anyone should be trailering a sailboat with the mast stepped.

Some of those boats step the mast on a seat on top of the cabin, others the mast runs through the top of the cabin to a seat on the deck - if that mast pulled out completely (as opposed to just snapping off) he could have done some incredible damage inside the cabin and the cockpit and it wouldn't be visible from the photo next to the article. Dropping that mast is probably a two person job that takes about 10 minutes.

At any rate - that ten minutes probably cost him several thousand dollars.

He didnt know the lines were too low??? I think every driver knows they are resposible for knowing how high the rig they haul is. They have never changed the clearance of power lines. I would expect the driver to be sued for all damages caused, and his insurance may well not cover such an ignorant move.

So is it lines too low, or rig too high?

Re: Check clearance

or, the buddy gets a ticket for using his truck to help a friend. and the friend gets some hefty repair bills for being.....

"Police said Fisette told them he was pulling the boat from the Lower Harbor to his friend's residence, which is located along Fourth Street. Fisette's friend, Thomas xxxxx, 24, was the owner of the sailboat."

i'm imagining dumb and dumber. i like how the story writer says he "was" the owner of the boat...ouch.

Re: Check clearance

Well, it's been awhile, but I drove trailer trucks from 1974-1983 and I know for sure that I personally was responsible to know if my trailer could clear overhead obstructions. I got my start driving for an asphalt construction company hauling equipment. Had several guys tell me about a driver a couple of years earlier pulling an asphalt plant baghouse, approx. 14'4" high, through a small town in central Iowa. He snicked off about 6 power lines before they got him stopped. Company paid the bill but was anxious that it not happen again.

I heard that the town raised their power lines to 15 feet.
