On-Going Problem. For over a year the check engine light and overheat alarm has gone off after 3/4 of a mile at WOT. Originally posted and given the advise to look into fuel restriction. Over winter cleaned/rebuilt entire fuel system to the pump. Same problem this year. Take to mechanic, he says overheat-rebuild water pump, replace grommets on water tube, System check on temp sensors, Flush, Flush, Flush-On-Going Problem. 96 Johnson 150, J150ELEDB.
Is there anything we are overlooking. Next option pull the heads?

Re: Check Engine High RPM

If it were me I would get a couple of the melt sticks from auto supply store.

Your heads should run between 125 and 175 degres. Buy heat test sticks accordingly.

Make a mark with each stick. The 125 should melt and run like new paint. The 175 should remain dry and chalky.

If you pass this test, then I would replace the heat sensors in the heads.

If you truly are overheating, Then I would change the thermostats. Assumeing the water pump is pumping adquiate amounts of watter. And that you also have free flow of water thru engine block.

Even if telltale stream looks good and strong does not mean that water is flowing through block.

It only means that the water pump is supplying water for cooling.

Good luck!

Re: Check Engine High RPM

Mich,

I have a 1987 Johnson 150 with the same problem. I have replaced the water pump and removed my two thermostats with no luck. The engine continues to give me the check engine due to high temperature. Mechanic tells me that he may have to pour acid in the engine due to heavy build up inside motor. I am skeptical but have no choice. Let me know how you resolve your problem as it may be related to the same problem I am having.

Thanks
Gus
Thanks for the tip Goodoleboy, I'll try the melt sticks. Already replaced the thermostats when I did the work on the water pump. I appreciate the advise.

Gus: I'll keep ya posted, frustrating isnt it!!

Checked the heads with a heat gun after alarm went off, reading 147F. Replaced the sensor with the quick start wire just because my mechanic loned it to me, no help. New development: 3000rpm and the alarm goes off, for the last year its takem WOT or close to for the alarm to go off.

Re: Check Engine High RPM

Do you know if the correct waterpump was installed? Correct thermostat, seats OK? Replace both sensors.

Torres: 1987 did not have check engine light. The carbuator engine that have check the engine light is for fuel restriction. Replace the anti-siphon valve, check all fuel filters.

I think I would replace the alarm. If new one works as intended.

Then I would take a claw hammer a beat hell out of the old one.

Just to get even!....Grin

Good luck!
