Hello, This morning I got a complete nice '88 Cobra outdrive out of a 3.0 omc engine. I also got a starter,trim&tilt motor,exaust elbow, and some transome assembly. I will be going back to pick up the complete seized 3.0 engine for free. My question is will this drive work on a '87 2.3 omc cobra? They look the same. Here is a pic of what I got for now.

Try putting OMC in your topic header & you will get better results!....
I think it will work, however ther are those far more knowlegable than me on matters OMC....

As far as I can tell all four bangers have the same gears, all v6 have the same gears, and all v8 have the same gears, except maybe the big 454 with the King Cobra drive(not sure).

I have the 1988 OMC Cobra owner/operator manual, and it says the upper gears in the 2.3 are 21:21 and the 3.0 are 21:18. The lower unit gears are the same, 13:26.

may have to prop it to get better peformance. looks like the lower unit has been redone. check to make sure it has the updated shift cable as well. it should be red. maybe it has the correct bevel on the gears. looks like a good score for free.
