Melted the pulley, and totally ruined the impeller on my Bravo 3 seawater pump.
although I'm not sure why it did?.

That is odd. Did the seawater pump lock up?

not quite lock up but very hard to turn with out the belt on. Then when I put the new pulley on and started it, the sea water pump would not turn with the belt on.

That sounds like a seawater pump issue and not an idler problem.

So your thinking that the seawater pump stopped, the belt kept spinning and melted the plastic idler??
When the belt was off I tried turning the seawater pump pulley by hand, i could do it but it was hard… when I took apart the impeller housing the impeller looked to be in almost perfect shape, nothing broken off etc. hmmmmm

How are the bearings in the pump? It should spin like a top with the belt removed.

Mine is hard to turn by hand with the impeller installed. The belt should have not problem turning it though. In the first post you stated that the impeller was ruined but that last post you said it was perfect. What is the timeline of events?

Good Point! I assumed that the impeller was ruined before I took it apart…. It was not but somehow the belt would not turn the pulley so thats why I thought the impeller was shot. I was surprised to see the impeller intact when I pulled it apart.
The pulley spins freely and quietly without the impeller. We were out for a couple of hours today and all is good….

From what I'm reading the idler locked up and caused the issue. You can spin the pump w/o the impeller and it spins easy and no noise. When the new idler was installed I think it wasn't adjusted correctly which caused the belt to slip on the pump. The pump was put back on and everything was working again.

I think you got it…… Thanks!

I just got both raw water pumps rebuilt this year and they definitely DO NOT spin like a top. They are "firm" when spun
