The 'coupler off the hitch' thread made me think to post this. Would fit in SHT also, but....

I recently acquired a '88 GMC 1500 to use as a tow vehicle. Has the standard step-bumper out back, and had a 2 inch ball mounted up. Well, since both of my trailers have 1-7/8 couplers, the 2-incher had to go. And the way the bumper is made, I could only get on the nut with a deep well socket. Got on it with my trusty breaker bar, and the @#%% nut would not budge. Did not want to risk breaking the breaker bar, 'cause it belonged to my deceased father. So, I hose down the nut with WD and wait until I can come back with my 18" snapon BB from work.

This is where the story get interestin' ;)

A good dose of PB Blaster, a 18" BB, and a 5-1/2 foot piece of pipe (!) I manage to get the nut to move, barely. Add in more PB, a blue-flame wrench, a pipe wrench to hold the ball, and the wife

So, long story short, it took the BB and the pipe to turn the nut all the way off the ball. Two half-turns, spray w/PB, repeat. Methinks the ball had been on there since 1988

Moral of the story: if you have a bumper mounted ball, might be wise to pull the ball about once a year and lube the threads. Might save you or someone a whole lotta grunting

Gonna pull the trigger on a reciever hitch fer the truck.....

Nah don't bother pulling the ball, just add the new size to one of the side holes. If there are no side holes break out the trusty ol' drill with a 1" bit.
Now I know you have seen one of those trucks with three balls on the step bumper..

trusty ol air compressor at 150 lbs and 1/2 inch impact if the impact is having troubles step up the the barely used 3/4 inch if still no go plasma. use any and all excuses to use the plasma since its a whole hell of a lot fo fun. also id use a host bring it up a few feet so your not bending down ruining your back. i put some tires on for my uncle once he said he didnt want them to come off while driving[on garbage truck f 450] so long story short 6-8 months go by and its tire time he couldnt get them of easy. took him 30 minuites to switch tires on the 1 dually. then he told me there is a differnce from tight and TO TIGHT! was i in the wrong they didnt fall off?

LOL, I know the feeling! and a gorilla put it on too! I had the opposite problem, last year the first outting, I went to hook the boat up and the nut was loose. Dont know when it got that way or how (Maybe someone tried to steal the boat by unhooking the nut???) but now I check it each trip.

At first I thought this was a post about Anthony Weiner, flaming liberal, NY. Anyway, I've not had a frozen ball but I have had a frozen receiver that I gave up on after PB blasting, WD40 and a dousing of 30 weight then pounding with an 8 lb sledge hammer to no avail. I was selling the truck so I just let it go. Wise to lube anything like that now and then especially if you live in the rust belt.

Ya, I gotta Love Arizona for longevity of metal parts...but can be hard as heck on plastic and vinyl LOL. My Boat and trailer hailed originally from Wisconsin or something like that, Boats in great shape but the trailer is showing some signs of "I'll need a trailer soon" Silver anti sieze works great, i use it on almost everything I want to ever come apart again. On my Buell motorcycle, I use Locktight on everything (You have to have ridden one)!

my moms old vehical had this issue, once tried geting it out the heaviest chain i could find around the biggest tree in teh yard, pull the pin out heat it up wrap chain around ball and tree [she had exploror awd] few attemps at low acceration, nothing gave so i gave it 1 foot of slack and pounced on the accerator NOTHING GAVE!!! wasnt wearing seat belt almost went threw windshield. figured before i ruin her frame or worse tranny and axles an what have you i gave up. lets just say some times its easier to just leave it in there then to mess with trying to get it out.

Re: Check your nuts!

I had to use a cold chisel and hammer to bust off a nut that wouldn't budge. Tried heating the thing with a oxy/accetelyne rig, didn't help. That chisel was a lot of work.

Hmmmm, OK to break the employers tool but not your own? That doesn't sound right to me.

Lifetime warranty, plus I'm willing to bet it was his own tools used at the place of employment... Most jobs that need snapon tools also require the employees to buy their own hand tools, otherwise there is a constant stream of tools that grow legs.

Yep, my tools! Had to get the big breaker-bar 'cause I'm a small feller, and I work with a bunch of idjits that don't know what a torque wrench is for, even though the Company provides 'em ! T-wrench and brass tools are all the Co. will provide, though they're fair about replacing stuff broke on the job.....

I put anti-seize on just about everything that might be in the weather or have a chance to gall.....it works wonders when it comes time to disassemble.

Re: Check your nuts!

even have to cut a wrench in half and the only one you can find that size in is a snap-on? and you KNOW that you have a dozen other cheap *** wrenchs that you wish you could cut. sad part is my dealer wouldnt take the wrench back. he told me you cut this on purpose so i purposely wont replace it. i keep that wrench in the top of the tool box to this day as a reminder.
