Two years ago I bought an everstart maxx marine battery at (unowhere) and Vector smart charger from a local outdoors store (academy) I keep the battery right here behind me with all my gear in the den/dining room. No worries my old house is well ventilated . I leave it on the smart charger anytime Iam not out using it,the small fan on the charger quit working several months or maybe a year ago. But it seems to still be doin its job and my battery lasted for two years , but now appearantly has a dead cell. I am just curious if my charger killed the battery or it was just normal life span of an $80.00 battery. It has a cell open(not shorted) according to the code on my charger. I usually go fishing every weekend and my battery would only draw down from around 12.8v to 12 volts after a good day on the lake(intermittent usage) How can I check my charger to be sure its not killing my battery? I read a thread on these batteries and Iam sure you can buy a lemon with any brand and I had been real happy with it but think two years seemed kind of short lived considering the battery was always emmediatly recharged and kept indoors on the charger. Anybody have one of these chargers ? Iam going to wallyworld tonight to get another battery because I need to fish tomarrow hopefuly I will get one at least as good as the last one but hoping for a better one

Re: checking a smart charger

Smart chargers are simple to check as far as output with a volt meter. Whether it shuts off before cooking your batt is another matter given it's hooked up 24/7. Cheap charger, cheap batt, could be both. But the fan on the charger is there for a reason and if it hasn't worked for over a year, maybe the control chip fried. I wouldn't do it again at the least.

smart charger should take your battery up to 14.4v and then drop back to about 13.8v to maintin it ...if it never gets to 14.4v or goes way up for long periods that will bugger your battery ..If it a sealed one prise off the tops ..violence may be required and top it up...has worked many many times for me and my friends .

It's very nicely written & laid out Bruce but I disagree most of the content of the link you posted.

Curious about what fucawi thinks of it.
Its not the best but it describes each stage somewhat correctly. Basically first stage is a constant current until 14.4V. Second stage is constant voltage until current drops to a set level. Third stage is a float voltage which is close to 13.3V. Obviously, the charger has no idea of what the battery capacity is.

Maybe you would like this link better which is a manual from Guest. This is for a 2 amp charger but larger capacity ones are similar.

As far as what Fucawi thinks, I sure don't care.

Re: checking a smart charger

now bruce if I said that I would get a warning....

But from where it says 1.Baulk charging I can see no problems with what is stated ..you would get 25% in the baulk stage but struggle for 40%.....otherwise its fine..

The problem is that people either want to stick with the old wives tales or take on board ideas contrary to what they thought ..

You could be getting information from someone who has 30 years experience designing auto electrical systems/charging systems...maybe they worked for Land Rover.Jaguar .peugeot and even British waterways......you could be and it would be sensible to ignore what they have to say
