It should be checked under a load. We usually back the boat in the water on the trailer enough to get the water pump below the water line and run it in gear. Follow the instructions in your manual. It's very simple but be careful around the flywheel. Again, your manual will give you several things to watch out for.<br /><br />Good luck!
