Can you check the dwell while cranking the engine or does it have to be running? I've only ever done the kind with the window on the cap that you adjust while running the engine. This doesn't have the window, It's a merc 140. '76 model.

Yes you can pull the cap off and check dwell with only cranking the engine over, make your adjustments, put the cap on and check it running.

Don't forget changing dwell will change the timing... but changing the timing will not effect the dwell.

Thanks Eric, I thought I could do it that way beings the exact same process is taking place whether it's cranking or running, it's just happening a lot faster when it's running. Now to see if this ol' girl will "spark the plugs" now that every component in the ignition system is new. Thanks again. Jim.
