Checking for Freeze Cracks

This is the second year I've had my Sea Ray Monaco, w/ 350 V8. I recently found this site and started reading all of the winterizing info. I followed the manual pretty closely for winterizing, but last fall I did the thing with the 5 gallon bucket of antifreeze on the platform and used earmuffs to fill it.

I've read now of the dangers of doing it this way. I think I let the thing run long enough just on fresh water to get the thermostat to open, but I'm not really sure.

My question is this: If there is damage, how would it be different than if I hadn't winterized at all? Also, given what I did, where should I inspect for trouble/is there anything I can do before I re-commission when it warms up, or should I just wait?

I live in southern tennessee and we get a few pretty cold spells during the winter, but not like up north...probably in the teens at night for a few nights in a row at the coldest.

Start it up and run it and start looking for leaks, and keep an eye on the oil. If it turns milky and starts filling up the crankcase, you have an internal leak. If you have water leaking externally, from the block, you will see it.
The manifolds are protected nicely when running AF from a bucket.

Ayuh,...

Sounds like you Missed the Most Important Step,...
You're Supposed to Drain the Block after you run it,+ Before you start the Antifreeze....

Running,+ Checking it will tell you whether or Not you got Lucky....

I'll check it as soon as I get a chance. Anyone know where the block is most prone to damage?

I get the point Bond-o. I accounted for all the stuff that the manual brought up, but thought this would be an easier way to account for the raw water. I've already read all the reasons that this is a bad idea...

Ayuh,....

Either on either side of the block, along the oil pan rail, both Outside, or Inside,...
Or at the deck surface along the outside....
And,...
Under the intake manifold, in the lifter valley...

If you didn't drain the block and if you're lucky, the core plug(s) might have popped out. They rarely do though. Check these. THere will be one in the back of the block that you will not be able to see.

Re: Checking for Freeze Cracks

Ok, so the cold weather passed here in TN for the moment and I put a battery in and got the earmuffs going and started it up...

I couldn't find any trouble, and I'm hoping that I dodged the bullet. I ran it for probably 15-20 minutes and no water was leaking anywhere that I could tell on the outside and the oil stayed a clear amber color - the level stayed the same from beginning to end.

The exhaust looked normal (invisible) once all the fogger was burned out of the carb.

Anything else I should be looking for before breathing a sigh of relief?

You dodged a bullet and got lucky.

You kicked yourself enough already forget it and move on.

Ask everyone here if they f---ed up and if they are telling the truth, they will have to nod up and down.

Winter ain't over yet, here it snowed 11 inch's.

Yup, I know winter isn't over yet - but it's definitely taking a break at the moment in TN. High of 74 today, low of 50...

I'm just thankful it looks like my engine is fine.

BTW, if anyone is still reading this thread, the motor has 602 hours on it. This seems low for the age of the boat, and it looks super clean - shiny and black.

Anything I should be looking out for on a motor of this vintage and # of hours? Is there a comparison to a car's mileage that 600 hours is anything like?

Thanks!
