I changed the l/u lube yesterday on my 9.9 merc 4 stroke. I had a hard time getting it all in since squeezein a bottle and puttin in top screw by myself is tough. Some oil dripped out as i was fumblin with the screws (hands all oily). I read from a Tohatsu website that the lube level can be checked by removing the fill(top) screw and inserting an inch long section of wire into the motor. When you pull it out with oil on it that means your level is fine. Would that work for a Mercury too?

With the motor in the down position, the lower unit oil level should be at the upper plug level. Just keep adding oil until it overflows a bit and then replace the plug.

One other item, next time you're at Walmart buy the little hand pump that screws into your lower drain plug, makes the process easier, neater, cleaner.
