So I am planning on changing the impeller on my 1961 5.5Hp Johnson and decided to remove the starter before I remove the powerhead. Once off I remove the little cover for the hole that allows you to check the points on this motor without removing the flywheel. I was wondering if anyone knew what the correct procedure was, since it is difficult to see where the rub bar of the point is on the cam. Would one just attempt to center the point opening inside the hole and assume that is close enough to the "set" point for this?

just adjustt the points to a max of .020 at the highest point of openning but.... if never done you should pull the FW inspect for cracked coils possibly replace condensers etc...

caraefull with the carbon seal under the PH... very delicate

???----Find the point of maximum opening.----Adjust it to 0.020"------There is nothing simpler in my opinion.-----Brilliant that you can do this kind of maintenance at your remote cabin without any special tools.

as a member of AOMCI you would have download access to the Johnson 400 page + service manual which covers your oldy extensively. that is where that above page comes from :)

that book is a bible for oldies maintenance carbs, ignition ph gc etc....

Yep, that's the process. With the flywheel hole over the points, they will be in position to be set to 0.020".
