checking tach on sidemount control 225 johnson 1987

My tach is down. Does anyone know if I can check for voltage from the pins on the sidemount control. I am wondering if it is the harness or the tach. Also are there any other leads going to the tach. I see 3 pins on the plug in, guessing they are<br /><br />1. ground<br />2. power<br />3. tach<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />Stephen

Is your motor charging? Check voltage at battery without it running and with it running. It should go up. If it doesn't replace your rectifier and that will fix the tach problem too.

Voltage was 12 not running ~15 when running. I also tried switching the gray wire to yellow grey on the terminal strip (from another post) with no success. I pulled out the tach, anyone know how to test. P.S. All the gauges run switched power from the tach cable from the side mount control so I know the + - power was good.

I believe the gray wire gets an AC voltage when running. You can check for signal when running (low voltage AC). Easier is to borrow a tach, try it, and if not working, odds are it's the rectifier. Manual should have troubleshoot guide for rectifier outputs.<br />Good Luck

Anyone give me a ball park $ figure (Canadian preferred but I can convert American) to replace the rectifier in an 1987 225 Johnston with Power Steering. My tach worked in my buddies boat so it is probably my rectifier. I will check it with a meter this weekend, but I doubt I have the expertise to change the rectifier.
