1987 johnson 175. Model j175tlcua. Wanted to check my trim fluid level. Book says to check level with rams fully extended. Then also says motor should be verticle. So way I read, makes me think opposite positions. So should rams be fully out to check level?looks like only way to even access plug. But when my book said motor verticle, threw me off. Thanks

You likely can't gain access to the fill plug when the engine is in the down position. Run it up for inspection. Once you add any hydraulic oil, then run the engine up/down a few cycles. The system will "self bleed" itself this way. Keep adding till the oil level is even with the bottom of the oil fill hole.

That's strange, my manual says the unit must be in vertical position, sure you didn't misread it?
