I have a water cooled rectifier on my 95 Johnson 112 engine. I want to make sure that it is working properly since I am not getting a charge at the batteries and my tach is also not working. All the instructions and videos I have read has the rectifier removed from the engine and being tested on a bench. I am wondering if it needs to be removed from the engine just to check it? I would hate to have to pull the flywheel if it is not needed.

Thanks!

There are some tests you can do with the rectifier connected and the engine running.

There are further tests you can do with the rectifier disconnected and the engine not running. It is not necessary to remove ths rectifier to carry out these tests

See the CDI electronics troubleshooting guide, page 8

Based on the symptoms you describe , viz battery not charging and the Tacho not working ,either the rectifier is dead or less likely the stator coil is open circuited.
( assuming all connections good of course)
