Re: Chemotherapy for Wood Rot in Transom or Stringers

I recall a good bit of discussion regarding treatment with glycol/borates some years ago in WoodenBoat magazine's wood technology columns and readers' letters. It worked for them also. I don't recall, however, if they addressed the question of epoxy consolidation of the rotted wood after this treatment, which is what I have considered for my own transom project. If anyone else has some info on how that might work, I'm sure many would be interested.

John

Good article . What I would like to know . What is the difference between these two products Git Rot and Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer from the Rot Doctor? I do have a transom that I am going to repair and don't know which product would be the best.

Well I have used anti freeze in a rot situation but not in a boat. We have a Formica counter top in our patio. Water got to the wood at one of the seams and - - rot. I took a veterinary hypo needle (huge) and squirted lots of anti freeze into the seam. It seems to have stopped the rot.

I started to try it on a nasty toe nail. I could feel a mild burning but did not keep up with it long enough to see if it worked.

edd - The anti freeze method is only for killing the rot. It does not put anything into the void from the rotten wood. I found Git Rot to be useless as it does not penetrate the wood or kill the rot. It does fill the void with an epoxy though.
