i just bought a boat with a 2005 yamaha 115 EFI 4-stroke. boat was not run but 3 hours and had not been run in over a year. it started great and only problem is that it has a cherping noise from the motor in neutral sometimes. other than that it runs great. i think i should change the oil. what about the water pump? what could the noise be? thanks b-dog

Re: cherping noise

Sounds like something inside somewhere is making a noise that sounds like a chirp. And when it makes that chirp, you are hearing it and that is the problem. Eather turn up the radio or give us a model number.

Had the same problem with mine. Only time I took it back to the dealer in 3 years. They lubed the bushing - noise gone.

It wasn't i/u it was l/u which is cryptic for lower unit.

I think I know the answer to my question, but would like to know for sure. I have this same problem and keep my boat in the water and do not have a trailer. Is this something that can be done (by a yammy mechanic) when it's in the water, or would the boat need to be pulled out with a forklift?
