I just bought a 1996 Celebrity Firestar Monday. Took it out on the water Tuesday, and everything was fine until we were idling in the water getting the tube set up and the engine cut off. We tried restarted it but it wouldn't ignite. It sounded like it wanted too. So sprayed some starter fluid on the carb. and after a couple of more sprays it started. We headed back in, but it sputtered along and then died.. We could never get it started again, and had to be towed in (300 bucks) The boat has receipts for new spark plugs, hoses, distributor, fuel line, fuel filter carb. lines. When you take the carb top off and press the lever I can see gas going into it. Any help you could give me would be great. I am not sure where to start, as I have never owned a boat before.
Thank You.

Also, I don't have a manual. I am sure that would help me alot. I was wanting a diagram of the engine.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... Sorry I missed ya the 1st couple of passes,...

It definitely sounds like a Fuel issue,...
Regardless the reciepts with the boat,...
Pull the fuel filter, then dump it into a larger vessel,+ Look for Water...
Depending on what ya find, the Usual Suspects are the tank vent, the standpipe, the anti-siphon valve, the lines, the filter, the fuelpump, or the Carb...

Btw,... Checking the condition of the Sparkplugs will tell you if it's Lean/ Dry, or Flooded/ Wet...

Check at the Adults Only section at the begining. You have fuel it seems but is it good? Do you have juice to the coil? You're gonna need a few tools and meters to check things out. Don't get me wrong here please, but you're also gonna need some knowledge of how the boat works and what different parts are. Guessing right now is not educated. Need to know more. Determine if a fuel or ignition problem first. Tough for us to do that over a keyboard. Good luck and when you have more info, post it.

Re: Chevy 350 Engine/Mercruiser 5.7 Problems!!

I put the boat in the shop on July 29th and just got it back 2 days ago. That is 2 weeks in the shop to replace a fuel pump/system and re-do some wiring with fuel hoses and such. Picked it up, brought it home, packed it up the next day and got it in the water, warmed it up a little, when I looked down at the oil pressure gauge it said almost zero- I called mechanic and he said it was because I was idling some and I needed to open the throttle and get it going. So I did, but when I did the WOT- the engine cut off.. Waited a minute or 2- turned it over, ran it, tried to WOT- cut off again.. While I am sitting in the lake- other boaters said there was a film all around me- Like gas or oil was leaking.. I had just turned on the bilge pump, so I wasnt sure if it was fresh or maybe some oil was in the bottom spilled? Tried again to WOT and died.. I did this 4-5 times trying to get us back to load up.. I wasn't out on the water 20 minutes when all this happen. The boat still seemed sluggish, like it would bog down some.. going 3 mph hour with the nose up in the air- I can't even see without standing up..

Did you check to see if the eng had any oil in it. I think if the gauge is correct you prolly hurt the eng.

I hope the gauge was wrong and you actually had oil in there.

What I think I'd recommend is when you get your boat back from the shop, every time you get it back, do some basic checking on it yourself before you try to go on the water.

That means check to see that it has the right amount of oil, make sure the plug wires are on tight, look it over for obvious problems. If you have a freshwater cooling system, check the coolant level in it. Check the level of power steering fluid if you have that. Check the battery for good voltage, and if necessary check the level of electrolyte in the battery.

All these are just basic maintenance checks, like you would do on a car, and they can save you a lot of hassle and money.

Once you have these done, then connect the boat engine to a set of muffs (earmuffs for cooling water, they attach to a hose and clamp on the engine when it's in the driveway) and start the engine on the trailer with the water running. Don't go above about 1000 rpm, and then only for a little while. Check to see that water comes out of the drive at the prop and near the transom. Also check the engine temps to be sure water is cooling it properly... the dash gauge will help with this, but an IR thermometer will help more.

Once you get it idling in the driveway for 15-20 minutes, then I'd have enough confidence to take it on the lake.

Given your situation I'd document the call to the mechanic. If there really was no oil in there, there's a chance the engine is seriously damaged by you trying to run it enough to get to shore. In that case you'll need proof of the advice he gave you in order to get them to fix the engine or pay for someone else to fix it.

Note for the future: If a gauge suggests a problem or the engine runs funny, the very first thing to check is the oil level. An engine without oil or not having enough will self destruct in short order, and it's much, much more expensive than getting a tow.

Good luck,
Erik

I don't know if this could be the case, but on the later GM Efi systems, didn't they have a oil pressure cutoff? If the oil pressure goes to low, I thought the computer would shut down the fuel pump, on cars with electric fuel pumps. Does mercruiser do anything like that?. Maybe a limp home mode, but no WOT? Not sure if your boat is carbed, or EFI. Just a thought.

No oil pressure with electric fuel pumps equals no run.
