chirping gear box

I have a Johnson 90, 1994 and on my last trip, the gear box started a high pitched chiro. Took the gear box apart and the noise, which is not constant, was coming from a 1"x1" box that has two wires going into it. The wires are tan and one is a pink/purple. Any ideas as to what this warning device is telling me? Thanks

Re: chirping gear box

That little 1" X 1" box is your warning horn. Make yourself familiar with it, because it saves you a lot of headaches later on.

Overheat = Continuous tone similar to a fire alarm in your home.

No Oil = continuous short tones

Low Oil = chirp every 40 seconds

Fuel restriction = Continuous tone at or near full throttle.

Sounds to me like you had either a 'Low Oil' or ' no oil' warning. Check your oil, and get back. Let me know how much you had in there, and we can troubleshoot if the need arises.

Re: chirping gear box

Thank you so much skipper. I added oil, and the chirping is gone. What threw me off is that I still had oil in the tank but not nearly as much as I ususally run. Again, I really appreciate the quick and correct response.
