choke adjustment Edelbrock 1409

I have an electric choke on my Edelbrock 1409 carburetor. in prepping for winterizing my engine, I ran it until it was warmed up, took the flame arrestor off and saw my choke plate was only about 1/4'' open. I let the engine run a few more minutes, water temp 150.....choke in same position.

I checked and with key on, I have 12v to choke. there are what looks to be calibration marks on the choke housing, but I see no way to adjust the arm of the choke spring, to allow the choke plate to open fully.

Anyone familiar with this?

3 screws hold the choke heater to the carb, loosen and rotate the housing

I loosed those screws, but didn't see a way to rotate the "cap", your saying the whole housing turns?

also, the engine seemed to run fine this summer, but I wonder if performance would be affected with the choke only 1/4" open? (you know I am hoping you say yes, and I can expect more zoom next year:joyous:

loosen the screws and GENTLY TAP THE HOUSING TO LOOSEN IT, turn to adjust opening

question: Did you open the throttle at all during warmup, or not? If not, the choke may not open because the fast-idle linkage usually has to move first, and that happens when you give it some gas!

Just a thought

Yes, I did rev the engine a bit, no change. BT, I went back out and looked. there are three legs that hold the metal housing to the carb, no way I see to rotate.

further....there are no slots on any of the screw holes, either where the plastic cap screws on, or where the metal body of the choke housing bolts to the carb.

Ayuh,... The black plastic part rotates under it's hold down clips, the screws are stationary,..

ok, I will try to move that cap and see what effect it has.

Thanks Bt doc, Frantic R, and thanks Bondo.

That did it. I rotated the black plastic cap a click and that did it. I powered the choke up and it opened all the way, took power away and let it cool down and closed all the way.

do you think the choke plate opening only 1/4" would effect performance? ie. restricting air flow into carb? the reason I am asking is that while trying to prop select last season with this new engine, I was surprised it wouldn't push a 21 pitch prop the way I expected with the set up I have. It ran good, (compared to my 30 y/o worn out engine I replaced), but maybe not up to full potential.

Ayuh,.... Maybe, but if true the spark plugs oughta be really Black with excess carbon,...

It will act way better at speed with that choke plate open. You are about to become very happy!

Re: choke adjustment Edelbrock 1409

Bondo, I cant tell you how hard it is to get my plugs out! My exhaust manifolds are sucked up so close to the spark plugs, I cant get a socket on it. I am going to try and find one of those thin walled plug sockets like the one that came with my motorcycle (wrong size).
It will have to wait till next year. The weather was decent enough today to winterize and cover the boat for its winter nap.

NH, I am anxious for the spring already! thanks to both of you for your input!

The choke being closed will likely limit top end rpms and cause an excessive rich condition, which would likely be quite noticeable at idle or just off idle. When the accelerator pump dumps in fuel, it will run the engine even richer which may cause a hesitation or stumble until rpms pick up enough to burn the excess fuel dumped in from the accelerator pump.

haulin, the choke was open about 1/4" toward the front of the carb, and it didn't seem to be a problem at all with hesitation, or idle. my boat ran 50mph with a 19pitch prop @4700rpm. that's why I posed the question. it seemed good.....but maybe could have been better.
I agree, it sounds like it would create a rich situation, and the plugs will tell the story.....but not till spring.

thanks for your input!
