ok so i have a 1989 175hp evinrude ,runs great idles great can take out on a nice long ride with no problem ,,now here is the problem when i get to where iam going and turn her off it is hard to turn back on almost like it is not getting gas or flooded ,,so i turned the little red arm on the primer solenoid all the way then close it and then the motor starts right up,,now i just bought a new solenoid ( $190.00) and before i tear open the package and make it non refundable ,,I was wondering what you guys might think,

After you take it for a "nice long ride", do you use the choke to re-start?

Re: choke primer solenoid ? what do you think

Have the RED lever of the solenoid pointed to the opposite end of the solenoid in its normal automatic operational position. Trace one of the small fuel hoses leading from the primer solenoid to its connection and disconnect it temporarily.

Pump the fuel primer bulb up hard. Do NOT start the engine but rather simply put the key in the RUN position.

Observe the end of the primer solenoid hose that you disconnected..... push in the key to activate the solenoid. Fuel should have shot out of that hose when you pushed in the key. If it did, the solenoid is functioning properly.

If fuel did not shoot out, check that 12 volts is present at the primer solenoid terminal when the key is pushed in before installing that new solenoid. It may be okay and you could have an electrical problem instead.

Let us know what you found.

how do i test that 12 volts is making it to the solenoid i did rewire the ignition a few months ago ( with some advise from you thank you btw ) but it is just now starting to act up but i woulldnt be surprised if it was electrical what tool do i use is it a voltmeter or a ohm meter

how bout the one with "volt" in the name

also after the long ride how long is the motor off? has it cooled completely or is it still warm?

is the primer bulb still firm? are you giving it a pump if not?

has the motor stayed in the down position or was it tilted up all the way? possibly draining the carbs a bit while tilted?

and as above are you using the choke function while trying to restart? if the motor is still warm. assuming the floats and everything in the carb is good you are likely flooding the motor.

You state "how do i test that 12 volts is making it to the solenoid i did rewire the ignition a few months ago ( with some advise from you thank you btw ) but it is just now starting to act up but i woulldnt be surprised if it was electrical what tool do i use is it a voltmeter or a ohm meter"

Set the meter to read "volts".
Attach black meter lead to powerhead ground.
Attach red meter lead to solenoid terminal/wire.
Have key in ON position.
Observe meter while pushing key in.

the engine is still warm it is only off just enough time to get the trailer ,,
