1973 Johnson 85HP 2 cycle and 16ft Glastron

My boat and motor run well, but I want to educate myself on the choke.

There are two chokes on my boat. One is on the motor (manual) and one is below the start key, toggle,(sticker says full choke). These do the same thing, right?

It seems the choke on the motor(manual) works better then the automatic choke when starting. The automatic choke connects to some type of actuator. Is the actuator starting to fail and where canI buy it.

There is also that warm up lever on the shifter. How does that work?

I typically pump the gas bulb, pull up the warm up lever ,full choke and turn the start key. Once warmed up put choke back.

Thanks for your help

Sounds like your starting procedure is good. You may want to have a look at the choke flaps while someone activates the electric selonoid(toggle switch) and see if the flaps are closing all the way. Somtimes you can adjust those a bit if nessesary...

WDC I have a 85ESL73, and on the shaft coming out of the solinoid should be sticking up 5/16" as per the manual. This is the smooth unthreaded portion. I just measured mine after rebuilding the carbs. If you have a manual on your motor adjusting the choke is in there, pretty simple, nice pictures too!

Airwarrior,

Thanks, where did you buy the parts to rebuild the carb and what manual did you use.

There are 3 positions on the choke lever / linkage on the motor. Make sure it's in the middle position ("Automatic") when not using it. If you push the lever to "Manual Off" then it will not work with the switch on the control box.

Re: Choke Question on 73 Johnson

I found an origional Johnson Service Manual on ebay sometime ago.... and I just called a local marina and they had six of the carb kits on the shelf, I assumed they didnt have the floats and was very pleased when I went to pick them up they were in there.

Barnes & Noble Book Store has a Seloc manual on thier website, and Clymer makes one as well, you can call and see if they have it in the stores or check a library.... if you have a marina/boat supply they might have them as well.
