I have a 1973 Johnson 85 HP motor and want to know what the position for the choke is. On the right front (as you are facing the motor) just below the cover, there is the manual choke button/lever.... it is flush to the edge, and then you can push it in... what is the setting for "in" and "out", which is open and which is closed...

I have a booger of a time getting her started... cranks great but maybe the carbs need cleaned and I wanted to make sure I had the choke right first... hate pulling it apart is I dont need too!

Re: choke question

Pull it out to choke. The choke plates must completely close to be effective on a cold start. The only way to be sure they are closing is to uncover the carbs and look down the barrels.

Re: choke question

3 positions all the way in is totally disabled, 1 click out is so the electric solenoid can activated choke from control, all the way out is manual choke. starting proceedure should be open vent on tank is equipped, pump bulb until hard, idle lever full up , if no idle lever push button in center of shifter and push shifter forward, hold choke button or push in on key hold for a few seconds, still holding turn key, let it rotate 5 or 6 times, if no start repeat process, if no startm repeat process without choke. you may have to puch ckoke once started to keep it running until it settles and warms up. doing a decarb with seafoam will make a big difference on performance.

click my name for email address ask for carb adjustments

Re: choke question

There are no carb adjustments. All jets are fixed.

Re: choke question

WOW!

Thanks for all the detailed info, it is really appreciated.

I have one more question, what is seafoam? I guess it is a carb cleaner, sounds like you get it at a boat dealer?

Re: choke question

It's a decarb agent used to clean cabon out of the engine. It is mixed with gas and run through the system. Deep Creep is the spray version that is sprayed directly into the carbs to decarbonize the cylinders, rings, Etc. It is sold at NAPA and other auto parts stores. It works...http://www.boatsetup.com/Decarb_Carb.html ] Decarb info [/url]

It is the same as the "Engine Tuner" mentioned in the article....

Re: choke question

Any auto parts store, farm store, or department store that sells auto parts has SeaFoam. It's a fuel additive that can be added to the fuel in your car, boat, cycle, lawn mower, chain saw, weed whacker, etc. It's sort of like aspirin for engines. Fixes most minor carburetor/fuel system issues due to varnish & crud. It's also used to decarbonize engines as was pointed out.

Re: choke question

so I guess deep creep is something safe to spray into a running two stroke? The only experience I have with two strokes is motorcyles and it was taboo to spray a carb cleaner into a running engine because it would break down the oil and you wouldn't have any lubrication... but I guess boat motors are different.

I will give deep creep a shot, and then the sea foam, cant hurt!

Re: choke question

you are correct in your thinking. deep creep has an oil in it. carb cleaner does not and ether burns way to hot for a 2 cycle.
