I have a 1990 evinrude 6hp recoil start. I can start the motor, but in order to keep it running, I have to work the choke. Does this rule out any problem with the fuel poump?? Thanks marvxyz

Re: choke run

Something is causing motor to run lean, like an air leak in fuel line, tank vent not open, etc. May also be carb needs cleaning.

Re: choke run

No, it rules-in a fuel delivery problem. If you have a separate fuel tank try squeezing the primer bulb to see if that keeps the engine running. If it does, that says fuel pump. If not, check for fuel line air leaks, clogged tank pick-up, and lastly, the carb probably needs to be disassembled, soaked, thoroughly cleaned and all passages blown out with compressed air. Then reassemble it with a new carb rebuild kit.

Re: choke run

if you have to work the choke i'd say it is fuel starved. 1st make sure your hose is on properly, there is a arrow on the primer bulb, should point to the engine. check for air leaks, and good connections, follow your fuel line and you will find a filter square black with a bolt in the middle. open this, and check for trash. while it is off pump primer bulb , you should get a full fuel flow. if all ok then it to the carb. use red search function at the top of the page, search "setting carb", by Joe Reeves. if that doesn't work it is probably time for a carb cleaning and rebuild kit. Sounds like we all agree as we were all responding basically the the same at the same time.

Marv....is this a new engine to you or did this problem just crop up?

If the engine is new to you and been setting a while, probably a carb problem.

Re: choke run

The engine is new to me. I know it has been sitting for probably 3 to 5 years.

Re: choke run

Pull the carb and do an overhaul. Most likely the bowl is gummed up. Take the carb apart and soak it out in carb cleaner. Follow up with choke and carb cleaner in a can, blow out all passages. Then do the same thing with compressed air. Remove the high speed jet and run a wire thru it to make sure it's open.

Reassemble using a new carb kit.
