Have a very hard starting 1976 evinrude and an easier starting 1982 evinrude 150 with primer solenoid! What’s the difference between a primer solenoid and choke solenoid and, could you remove the choke plates on the 1976 and install a primer solenoid? Am I making sense?

The electric primer solenoid is a valve.-----It opens when 12 volts is applied.-----When cranking the fuel pump supplies fuel at pressure.-----This fuel is then sprayed into into the intake as air goes through the carburetor.----This electric primer is a wonderful item.----Used on motors from 9.9 to 300 HP.-----I have installed this OMC primer on an inline 6 cylinder Mercury outboard.-----So yes it is simple to install it on a 1976 model motor.-----But IF this 1976 motor is hard to start there might be more issues than the CHOKE not working.-----Have you done any trouble shooting at all ???-----Or just jumped to a conclusion.----Sorry to be blunt here.

A lot of the research I’ve done said that particular motor was a notoriously hard starter! New plugs, wire, coils, filters, but never rebuilt the carbs which I was afraid to tackle! Could do it now, and then change over to the primer setup if all I’d have to do is get the primer solenoid and remove the choke setup! Anything else need to be done! Thanks!

You might have to drill and tap a nipple for the primer hose.

Look at the other carbs and see if they have a nipple from the primer.

There is no reason for a 76 model to be hard to start.-------If motor is in good condition it will start easily.----But you must use the correct procedure !!
