Hi

Firstly Im a first time boat owner, so excuse lack of some basic understanding and terminology...

I have a 78 Johnson 115hp Sea Horse, and it can be a pain to start though runs well.

It never (or very very rarely) starts without manually putting choke on (regardless of whether motor is warm or cold), and to do this I have to take the cover off, hold the choke lever and start the engine. Its a small boat (aprox 5m) but this requires some string and acrobatics to do solo, and is not always enjoyable on the sea !

I imagine at one time the motor had an auto choke, and certainly inside the motor there seems to be a space where something was removed, I also have a switch in the boat (identical to the starter switch and alongside it) that appears to do nothing at all. Ive bought a manual (almost 600 pages yikes!) but not really managed to shed any light on it yet.

Is there an easy way to rectify this, a part I can buy/salvage and get installed easily, or am I missing a trick somewhere ?

Ok, gone about this the wrong way (ask first, research after......) and have now found some useful info after searching the site. That said, specific replies always welcome !

You should have a choke solenoid on the left side of the carbs. It's a big round thing, tough to miss. On mine it is activated by a momentary toggle switch located on my control box directly under the ignition key.
