I have a 73' evinrude 70 and every time i want to start it i have to choke it once running it great at idle or wot but if i shut it down even for only a couple of minutes i have to choke to start. I cheked the lines and dont see any cracks were it could be sucking air and have cleaned the carbs twice.

Re: choke to restart

having to choke indicates not getting enough gas. If it idles find and runs fine don't know what else to tell you. low idle mixture starts at 1 1/2 open to start and then adjust from there.

Have you checked the compression? I've had a "tired motor" that I had to choke for about any start, but ran fine otherwise, and it turned out that I had about 70 psi in both cylinders (40 HP). New rings fixed 'er up.

Don't guess, use a temporary clear hose at the carburetors to be sure that air is not getting in the fuel lines. Bad gaskets on the carburetors could do that as well.

Too much air or not enough fuel = running lean and can burn a piston and ruin your engine.

When you lift the warm up lever you should get a lot of motion on the spark advance and very little on the throttle.

I ran a copression check and the motor has 156-160 on all three cylinders were would i find clear gas lines i think i am going to buy a carb. kit to eleminate the chance of leaky gaskets

Carb clean and rebuild is a great idea to begin with.

Re: choke to restart

cleaned the carbs again yesterday and used a high pressure cleaner all jurnals are clear and still same problem my carbs do not have a idle adjust just a screw with a jet behind it and the screw has a gasket it has to seat on or it will fall out learned this the hard way the screw fell out and was suck in the reed basket luckly thats were it stoped. could my fuel pump be causeing this prob because the jurnal that runs up from the bowl seems to need some presure to blow out the three holes on the top of the carb above the throtle butter fly
